I had a GP /rny in 1997. Lost 275 lbs in 7 months. I was not functioning, somewhere along the line I lost my cognitive ability and was too fatigued to function. I spent days and days in bed until a friend dragged me out to ER. I was put on TPN and about 6 months later I was judged strong enough to do a revision. I weighed 154 lbs down from 450.

The revision seemed to go OK. I gained wright up to about 225 and then leveled off. I never really gained my stamina or sense of well being back. Slowly my weight started to drop again and seemed to stabilize at 180. I was starting to have symptoms that my Drs. treated as unrelated. But they just kept on coming. First Arrhythmia, followed by anemia, neuropathy, loss of body temp (normal 95 degrees.) edema, persistent a fib, feinting spells, low blood sugar bradycardia, extreme low vitamin deficiencies, osteoporosis. 3 hernias, 3 kidney stone attacks requiring surgery to remove. I was complaining about muscle tissue loss even though my weight was stable at 180. Then about 3 years ago I woke up and my legs were too heavy. Eventually I could not climb stairs even 4 or 5 steps. I needed help to get out of chair. I lost all energy and strength. This was getting way to familiar when suddenly the weight started dropping fast as did all my blood work and protein levels etc. Up till now they treated each symptom as a separate problem and attributed them creatively to some syndrome or genetic condition. eg my hands shook so bad I could not hold a cup of coffee. This was essential tremor etc. Finally I collapsed. I have been on TPN again for over a year. The Bariatric Dept is trying to blame it on me and wants to do all kinds of trials to see if something will work.

Let me say here that for the sake of brevity I have only mentioned some of the highlights of my problems. After a second referral they have suddenly changed position completely. They want to do a reversal within three weeks. I have not had time to take all this in but it seems like the only way. I am at the end of this journey one way or the other.

Does anybody have any advice for me? Thank you.

Wow – you have really gone through the wringer. I don’t think very many people look at this page. You might want to copy your comment and move it to this page. (Due to copyright rules I can’t move it for you without permission.) A lot of people keep up with that page, and you might find someone who has experience in your area and may be able to refer you to another doctor for a third opinion, although the reversal that’s scheduled may be the best thing to do. It sounds like they’re at least taking you seriously now, and that’s a good sign.
